    "2010 Rock Shox Revelation U-Turn 20mm vs. 2010 Fox 32 TALAS RLC 15mm

I picked up the new 2010 Rockshox Revelation Team 150mm Blackbox U-turn 20mm Maxle-Light fork a few weeks ago. A friend has the 2010 Fox 32 RLC FIT TALAS 150mm qr15 through axle fork. We thought it might be helpful to others by comparing the two forks as they are probably the most popular all mountain forks around.

First, some facts. Average rider weight is about ~175 lbs and we ride Mojo SLs (yeah, like Twinkies). I came from a 2009 Revelation 20mm U-turn poplock fork and he came from the 2009 Fox 32 TALAS 140mm qr15 fork. I ride a 20mm Chris King hub on Mavic 819 rims/Ibis 90mm stem and he rides a 15mm Hope ProII on Mavic 819 rims/Thomson 90mm stem. Reach, stem angle, etc are very similar between the two bikes.

Testing consisted of switching bikes during/between rides to compare the forks for performance, etc. After some serious break in time, we thrashed these forks on 3+ foot drops, seriously rocky descents, and long, >10 mile extended climbs throughout Utah and Colorado. This includes, among others, the Winterpark bike park and the Monarch Crest ride.

    Chassis:
The new Revelation looks sweet with the carbon compression knob, machined U-Turn/rebound knobs and (finally) post mount disc tabs. We both liked the black color better than the Fox silver. The Rockshox looks more burly than the Fox with new “power bulges” and the 20mm Maxle looks absolutely massive next to the qr15 axle (although it’s only 5mm larger). The Rockshox graphics suck—they have to be able to come up with something better than this. The Fox looks like a typical Fox fork—this is not a bad thing as Fox forks always drip with quality. Even the graphics look great. Weight difference is negligible. Rockshox=4.04 lbs, Fox=3.97 lbs via an Ultimate digital scale with uncut steerers and the through-axle in place. A pair of slightly thinner socks will make up the .07 lb difference. The Maxle and qr15 are both really easy to use. Finally, how much could it possibly cost SRAM to put a brake hose cable guide on the Revelation??

    Verdict: tie

    Climbing:
Climbing is very similar for both forks as each has available platform damping and travel adjust. I rarely (if ever) climb out of the saddle, so I don’t use platform. Both seem to work very well when climbing. I don’t know the AC lengths of the forks, but they feel very similar. My buddy feels that the Fox platform system is superior. I have to defer to his opinion. The travel adjust systems are very different and each has its own benefits. Rockshox Travel Adjust—slightly more difficult to use but infinite travel settings and a bombproof travel adjust system. Fox Travel Adjust—easily usable three pre-set travel settings and not as reliable (check the net, there are tons of TALAS problems). Take your pick.

Verdict: 1st: Fox (better platform system), 2nd: Revelation

    Descending:
The Fox is very nice but has some problems that I had assumed Fox had fixed since I sold my 2008 Fox 32. First, it is very hard (nearly impossible) to get full 150mm of travel. I had to drop the pressure fairly low to use full travel. At this setting, the fork would wallow a bit mid-travel (even with compression damping increased). I could hit a sweet spot where I had just enough pressure to keep the fork up, not wallow, and still have good small bump compliance. Even a 5psi difference would screw this up. Don’t get me wrong, it’s much better than my 2008 fork but the problem still exists. I am admittedly biased and felt that the Rockshox is much more tunable. On this fork you can pump up the positive spring until it feels right and then use the negative spring to keep the small bump sensitivity in the sweet spot. Additionally, on large drops, we would get MORE than 150mm of travel (~152mm). I know some Fox 36 users that would love to have this much usable travel. The Revelation feels like a longer travel fork than the Fox (although both are rated as 150mm forks). We both agreed that the Rockshox felt markedly stiffer on descents than the Fox—probably due to the chassis/axle combination as the Hope and Chris King hubs are probably fairly equal in terms of stiffness. Finally, I could not tell much compression or rebound damping differences between the forks—I would say they were essentially equal. My buddy thought that the Fox dampers worked slightly better on ultra-fast medium sized multiple hits (although he felt that the additional stiffness and travel usage of the Revelation far outweighed this slight difference). We both screwed with all the settings to fully explore the abilities of these forks. Perhaps it’s marketing hype, but I think that the Blackbox damper is far superior to last year’s Motion Control damper (especially at high speeds).

Verdict: 1st: Revelation (stiffer, more usable travel), 2nd: Fox (possibly better compression damping at very high speeds)

    Misc:
Other notables are that the Rockshox’s warranty is twice as long as the Fox warranty. Additionally, you can work on the Revelation yourself. I have heard that the Fox FIT cartridge is not very user friendly. The Rockshox Revelation used in this comparison is about $750 MSRP while the Fox is about $150 more. The Fox seems to be a more sophisticated fork, although this did not seem advantageous during saddle time.

    Verdict 1st: Revelation, 2nd: Fox

    Overall:
We both agreed that the Revelation feels much more like an “all mountain” fork while the Fox feels more like a long-travel cross country fork. The usable travel and stiffness issues are a deal breaker. Additionally, the Revelation is cheaper, has a better warranty, and performs nearly as well (if not better) than the Fox in nearly every situation.

Final Verdict 1st: Revelation, 2nd: Fox"

  • плюс в сторону Ревелейшена: но СРАМ меняет демпферы по гарантии даже на секонд/хендовых вилках.
плюс в сторону фокса: офигенная вилка.
